The camp horror classic The Toxic Avenger is getting a remake. Deadline reports that Sausage Party co-director Conrad Vernon will helm the film, based on a script by Archer writers Mike Arnold and Chris Poole.

The new take on The Toxic Avenger will reportedly be a more grounded version of the over-the-top, low-budget original. Released in 1984, the first film followed nerdy health club janitor Melvin Ferd, who, after a run-in with a group of violent bullies, is set on fire before getting doused in toxic chemicals. Those chemicals left him extremely deformed, but also gave him super strength, turning him into a real (if completely gross) superhero. We’re not sure how you ground this particular premise, but we’re open to the idea.

The Toxic Avenger eventually turned into a franchise, spawning three sequels, a children’s cartoon, and even a musical. Whether or not this remake leads to its own franchise is an open question, but it’ll certainly be different as compared to anything Marvel or DC are putting out.
