Losing your new AirPods is easier than it seems

Apple is taking a fair deal of flak for its new wireless Bluetooth headphones, appropriately known as AirPods. Not only do they look quite goofy — like a failed attempt at bringing Spike Jonze's Her to life — but there’s genuine concern the devices will easily fall out of users’ ears. (There's even a $10 strap accessory to keep you from losing them.) Now, Conan O’Brien's late night team has crystallized the criticism in the form of a old-school iPod commercial parody.

It features the iconic dancing silhouettes with bright white AirPods trying to promote the headphones and failing as they’re ejected in the heat of a spin or head bob. It’s meant to skewer Apple, for sure, but it also raises an interesting point. It’s been 15 years since the introduction of the iPod, and more than a century since we started plugging devices into 3.5 and 6.5mm jacks. Apple says it’s time to change, but that means grappling with some realistic gripes about what we can and cannot do with wireless headphones. It would seem one of those activities that will be hard to enjoy is dancing.
