Cartoon Network announced today that the next season of cult hit Adventure Time will be its last. According to a report from the Los Angeles Times, the show's final episode won't be until 2018, with the final season — the ninth — extended with a number of specials. By the time all episodes are accounted for, the show, which first debuted as a regular series in 2010, will have spawned some 142 hours of content.

Adventure Time has been a massive critical success, praised for its imagination, whimsy, and heart. It's a series that some may write off as purely goof, but at its core, Adventure Time has proved time and time again to be deadly smart — about people, about what motivates them, and about the enduring delights of bacon pancakes.

Pendleton Ward, the show's creator, said in a press statement: "Adventure Time was a passion project for the people on the crew who poured their heart into the art and stories. We tried to put into every episode something genuine and telling from our lives, and make a show that was personal to us, and that had jokes too! I’m really happy that it connected with an audience for so long. It’s a special thing, I think."

And Adventure Time already has its own legacy, with many of the show's artists and illustrators moving on to create other cartoons including Steven Universe, Over the Garden Wall, and Clarence. And at least we've got a couple more years in the Land of Ooo yet to go, so come on: grab a friend, we're going to very distant lands.
