First Click: New iPhones and Apple Watch, new PlayStations, and more in the week ahead

We’ve got another gangbuster week in tech coming up. Last week brought us dozens of new products launched at IFA, Europe’s biggest tech show. We won’t have the same breadth of gear this week, but what it’ll lack in numbers will be made up for in notoriety thanks to Apple, Sony, and LG all hosting press events.

LG kicks things off with an event in San Francisco on Tuesday. The V20 is a certainty as follow-up to last year’s 5.7-inch V10 that featured an always-on second display. Notably, it’ll be one of the few phones launching this month with Android 7.0 Nougat.

Apple’s "See you on the 7th" event kicks off on Wednesday, September 7th. The rumor mill is fairly certain the new iPhones, presumably part of the iPhone 7 series, will ditch the headphone jacks and introduce clickless home buttons that should let the iPhones check the waterproof tick-box for the first time. A dual-lens camera for zoomed-out perspectives and other tricks is said to be coming to the Plus-sized model, only. We’re also expecting a faster Apple Watch with GPS, but you’ll have to wait until next year, at the earliest, before Apple releases a Watch with data to function independently from an iPhone. Read our event preview and the last minute predictions from KGI Securities' Ming-chi Kuo for the full lowdown.

Later on Wednesday, just after Apple, Sony will be hosting a PlayStation press event in New York City. We’re expecting to hear the first official details of two new consoles: a slimmer variant of PlayStation 4 as well as a new 4K-capable "neo" version of the current PS4, already teased by Sony earlier in the year. We’ll have a detailed event preview for you to pore over soon.

Thursday is the kickoff of TIFF, the 10-day Toronto International Film Festival. Verge critics Bryan Bishop and Tasha Robinson will be on hand to help steer you toward the best that cinema will have to offer in the weeks and months ahead.

But this is only a taste of what promises to be a huge week to come. First though, let’s get caught up on the weekend that was.

  3. Shaking hands with GM and NASA's RoboGlove

The former Young Astronaut in me jumped at General Motors’ offer to play with the RoboGlove. Who would pass up a chance to flex space-aged superhuman strength? I traveled to GM’s Warren, Michigan...

  4. 10 shows to binge watch during your long holiday weekend

It’s Labor Day weekend, which for most of us means a nice, three days off from work. It’s the perfect opportunity to catch up on some of the shows that you’ve probably been hearing about from...

The final season of Mythbusters had a conspicuous absence: the build team of Grant Imahara, Tory Belleci, and Kari Byron. While the Science Channel is rebooting Mythbusters as as a reality show,...

  8. 9 new trailers you should watch this week

It seems like across the board people are into the way The Night Of ended. I'm right there with everyone — without spoiling much, the way it ends up focusing more on the evils of the justice and...

  9. Watch the evolution of stop-motion film in this 3-minute video

Stop-motion animation has been a mainstay in cinematic special effects for almost as long as movies have been around. Filmmaker Vugar Efendi recently posted a video that charts the history of the...

  10. Razer created the clickiest keyboard of all time and now my coworkers hate me

I wasn't expecting to be impressed. Mechanical keyboards are great, but they're rarely practical. It feels badass to mash into a great keyboard with Cherry switches when I'm playing games, or for a...
