The gold Apple Watch Edition is no more

The second generation Apple Watch will be available in ceramic, a new material for Apple that is rare for watches to be made with. The Apple Watch Series 2 — which will also be available in aluminum and stainless steel like the first generation — will utilize white ceramic, which may make it heavier than its metallic counterparts.

The ceramic version is now branded as the Apple Watch Edition, which may signify the high-end solid gold watch wasn't the attraction they hoped it could be. The company says the ceramic is more than four times harder than stainless steel, so you won't have to worry about getting it scratched up like the more delicate gold version. The new ceramic Apple Watch Edition will cost $1,249 for the 38mm version, and $1,299 for the 42mm, a pretty dramatic price cut from the old Edition which topped out at $17,000.

The Apple Watch Series 2 will be available for pre-order on September 9th.
