Deadpool wants to be an Oscar contender

New, 12 comments

Deadpool made it to the Golden Globes, so the Oscars can’t be that far of a stretch, right? In a new promo spot, the Merc with a Mouth lays out a pretty solid case for why his film debut deserves a Best Picture nomination, including how many chimichangas made it onto the set.

Of course, it’s worth noting that Deadpool actually has a real chance of earning a handful of technical and non-technical Academy Awards nominations, including one for Best Picture. The film just received a well-deserved Producer’s Guild of America nomination for Best Picture, and the honor is generally seen as a bellwether for future Oscars glory. At this point, the film is on its way to becoming the first superhero movie to be nominated for Hollywood’s most coveted trophy.

That doesn’t mean Deadpool has the best chances of actually winning Best Picture, though. The competition is incredibly tough this year, with fellow contenders being Golden Globe winners Moonlight, La La Land, Fences, and Manchester by the Sea. All four films are prestige projects that are more obvious choices for Academy voters, so Deadpool would need to leapfrog them in a history-making upset to actually come away with the gold. Still, a nomination is a win for the film and the genre all the same.

The Academy Awards nominations will be announced on January 24th.
