Getting a good photo of yourself is a mix of practice and good lighting, but there’s hope for those of us that need a little help. The latest selfie craze on social media is a half anime makeover, half Instagram on steroids. It’s Chinese photo-editing app Meitu, a terrifying force of photo technology that has finally spread to the West. Think of it as sort of like a Japanese purikura photo booth but for your phone.
Meitu is available on Android and iPhone, and it's pretty easy to get started. The app offers a few general retouching and editing tools but in order to become the anime character of your dreams try the “hand-drawn” option. (In order for this to work, you need an internet connection.) The hand-drawn option includes a couple different features, including one that will give you a terrifying white wash (dubbed “angelic,” hmm) to rosy cheeks or goth makeup. The app automatically enlarges you eyes and narrows your face, which means you can pretty successfully erode yourself if you continue looping in the same photo again and again. I would recommend this for lulz more so than actual use.

The best thing about Meitu, however, is how it lets you instantly add an anime blush to anyone, and I do mean anyone. Let this be a reminder that just because you can do something, though, doesn’t mean you should.

Other Twitter users have found that it will make actual anime look even cuter, and is also a great way to brighten up a video game character’s smile. The only bad news is that we couldn’t get it to work on animals. The app may not recognize your furry friend, but damn if it doesn't make Potato Jesus look like the man of your kawaii dreams.
Ah, the face of perfection. Bless this app and all of the beautiful memeing it stands for.
