Smash Mouth: We ‘fully embrace the meme’

The boys of Smash Mouth (not to be confused with the boys of summer or the boys who are back in town) found new life in the late 2000-teens thanks to a combination of resilience and memes. There are at least dozens of “All Star” memes, most of which poke fun at the band’s commitment to its ‘90s aesthetic and goofy ties to Shrek. Now, in an interview with Inverse, Smash Mouth says it’s okay with its new meme status. “We have never taken ourselves that seriously,” bassist Paul Delisle said. “We like the attention, so even though it’s a bit of a goof, it usually centers around our song ‘All Star’ and it still sells weekly like mad. So we take the bad with the good and fully embrace the meme aspect.”

Most of that embracing is happening on the band’s Twitter account. Whether it’s enthusiastic endorsement of cunnilingus, feuds with major league baseball teams, grainy, unflattering photos, or Smash Mouth-branded photos of dead celebrities, Smash Mouth doesn’t seem to mind a little internet heat. And, for better or for worse, it’s hard to ignore.

But Smash Mouth thinks there’s not a lot of overlap between true fans and the meme-makers. Delise tells Inverse, “Most of our fans don’t even what a meme is.” Well, Smash Mouth fans, here are some examples for you, made possible by your favorite spiky-haired musicians:
