One of the best (and most crowded) talks at this year’s Game Developers Conference was a lecture by three of the directors of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Days before the game’s release, art director Satoru Takizawa, technical director Takuhiro Dohta, and game director Hidemaro Fujibayashi spent 90 minutes explaining how their team reimagined one of Nintendo’s most beloved franchises.
The trio shared many fun details, like how the game began as an 8-bit prototype and evolved through a number of oddball visual styles, including one with a bad boy teenage Link who plays guitar and rides a motorcycle. But plenty of the nitty-gritty details went unreported. Today, the full lecture was uploaded to GDC’s YouTube channel. This is your chance to see the movie-length talk for yourself. It’s perfect background audio for players currently adventuring in Hyrule.
