But there’s an annoying catch

American Express is adding several new perks to its flagship Platinum Card, including $200 in yearly Uber credits, automatic Uber VIP status, and a new stainless steel (as in, actual metal) card design. But the Uber credit isn’t quite as useful as it could be.

Amex Platinum cardholders who have added their card as a method of payment in the Uber app will receive up to $15 in Uber credits per month (except in December, when it’s $35). But, those credits do not roll over from month to month — it’s use it or lose it. So, in order to take full advantage of the Uber credits, cardholders will need to take at least 12 rides per year with Uber.

The change comes as Amex revamps the Platinum Card to compete with other high-end credit cards like the Chase Sapphire Reserve, and increasing its benefits is part of that overhaul. Also moving up is the card’s annual fee, which is going from $450 per year to $550 per year, as of March 30th. The new benefits kick in that day as well.

The other big perk added to the card today is a new a 5x Membership Rewards points bonus on hotel bookings made on amextravel.com. That’s a slight disappointment when compared to a recently added perk where members get 5x points on flights booked directly with airlines, as well as through Amex Travel.

Platinum cardholders will also be able to give additional cardholders like a spouse or family member the American Express Gold Card (though not the Premier Rewards Gold Card) for free. Additional Platinum cards will be $175 for the first three additional, though they will not be eligible for any Uber benefits.

Current Platinum card holders will see their annual fee rise by $100 on their next renewal date after September 1st, 2017, while new cardholders who apply after March 30th will pay the higher rate. Cardholders will receive the new stainless steel card automatically when their current card expires, but can request the new card after March 30th by calling the customer service number on the back of their Platinum card.
