Baywatch looks like a summer comedy you pretend you won’t see, and end up seeing twice

Though I could do without the meta winking

The official trailer for Baywatch a Baywatch-themed comedy-action film, also I assume a loose spinoff of 21 Jump Street, a 21 Jump Street-themed comedy-action film — is here. And aside from Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson dissing Zac Efron by calling him a “pussy” in the year 2017, it looks surprisingly enjoyable.

To the extent that this is the latest entry in the “self-aware explosions and babes” film genre (which includes the back half of the Fast and the Furious franchise, the new Xander Cage movie, and The Rock, just as a person), I’m not that interested. We get it! This movie will have Jason Bourne jokes and it will have Zac Efron as the handsome dummy smacking his forehead against the fourth wall, asking, “Am I the only one who thinks this is a job for the police?" Cool, fine.

However, as I just mentioned, it will have Zac Efron. He is quietly one of our best working comedians (Neighbors being an unimpeachable summer comedy largely on the shoulders of Efron and Dave Franco), and along with Channing Tatum one of the few famous Hollywood men I trust to care about my happiness. In this trailer he falls backward into a pool in slow motion, for me, and for a meta joke about the original Baywatch. Thank you, Zac!

His almost morbid physical perfection aside, Efron’s presence on a big screen is like getting a welcome back hug from summer itself. Which is to say Zac Efron, the person, is the song of the summer, every summer.

That makes sense as Baywatch, directed by Seth Gordon (Horrible Bosses, Identity Thief), will hit theaters on May 26th. You can go see it once in May, once in June, once in July, and once in August, probably.
