Baby Driver, Edgar Wright’s heist drama and musical romance mash-up, is ditching its original August 11th release date. TriStar Pictures will now release the film in theaters June 28th, in order to build on “the momentum of its world premiere at South By Southwest.”
The bump to the start of summer — and the traditional blockbuster season for action movies — says that Sony subsidiary TriStar is banking on the film being a success; with Spider-Man: Homecoming out just a week later, it’s a strong one-two punch from Sony.
Baby Driver stars Ansel Elgort as Baby himself, a youthful getaway driver working for a band of thieves run by Kevin Spacey. It’s a car chase drama with a musical kick; Baby has permanent hearing damage, and so he listens to music constantly to drown out a ringing in his ears.
Baby Driver also stars Jon Hamm, Jamie Foxx, Lily James, and Jon Bernthal. We saw the film when it aired at SXSW, but if you want a good summary of our thoughts, it has to be “sickest drift EVER.”
