The latest trailer for Netflix’s live-action version of Death Note is here with our first full look at many of the show’s iconic characters. L (Atlanta’s Lakeith Stanfield), the foil for Death Note holder Light Turner (Nat Wolff, The Fault In Our Stars), warns the public about the killer Kira before the two come face-to-face. The trailer also provides a better look at Willem DaFoe’s version of Ryuk.
In Death Note, a human who possesses the titular journal has the power to kill anyone who’s name and face they know. After finding the Death Note, a high school student named Light begins killing people he sees as evil under the name of Kira.
L is a highly skilled detective
In the anime version of Death Note, L is a highly skilled detective whose true identity is unknown. Much of the show is focused on a high-stakes game of wits between L and Light, with Light trying to avoid capture, and L attempting to discover the identity of Kira. Stanfield’s version of the character briefly appeared in the first teaser, though this is the first time we’ve heard him speak.
The trailer also features a look at Mia (Margaret Qualley from The Leftovers), who will be taking on an adapted version of Misa Amane. In the anime, Misa is a Kira-obsessed Death Note holder herself, though it’s unclear if Mia will also possess this power.
Netflix will release Death Note August 25th. You can stream the anime right now.
