British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran appeared in the Game of Thrones season 7 premiere in a hilariously random cameo, singing a folksy tune. He plays a soldier from King’s Landing, part of a small group in transit in the woods. The lyrics are from a song that appears in George R.R. Martin’s source material, the Song of Ice and Fire books: “For hands of gold are always cold, but a woman's hands are warm.”
Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) is attracted by the sound and ends up sharing a meal and some homemade wine with the friendly men, including Sheeran. They chat innocently with her, not knowing her identity, nor believing her when she says she’s heading to King’s Landing to kill Queen Cersei Lannister.
Will we see Arya kill Sheeran and all of his fellow soldiers in a later episode? Given what she did earlier in the episode, her hatred of all things Lannister, and her careful glance to see where the soldiers’ swords are, she may have planned to murder the whole group all along. Maybe his kindness and willingness to pass the bottle changed her mind? Or maybe she’ll just spare him because he can carry a tune.
