It seems that Seinfeld wasn’t enough to fill Hulu’s nostalgia itch. The company just announced an agreement with Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution that will make Hulu the exclusive streaming home to every single episode of Full House, Family Matters, Step by Step, Perfect Strangers, and Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper. That’s over 800 episodes in all.
All five shows will be available in their entirety on Hulu beginning September 29th, which is apparently “on the heels of the 30th Anniversary of Full House.” So Netflix went through all that effort to make Fuller House only to have Hulu come in and nab the exclusive on the original series? The streaming wars have reached a new level of petty and brutality.
If you’re under the age of 30, all you really need to know is that each show was part of ABC’s Friday night programming dynasty, TGIF, that topped ratings for years during the 1990s with its family-friendly comedy lineup.
You should also know that these shows had what are considered some of the best theme songs of all time. Former Verge video director John Lagomarsino, who now works with some of our other old friends at The Outline, made a pretty excellent podcast on Jesse Frederick, who composed several of the themes etched into the brains of everyone who watched ABC in the ‘90s.
