Nintendo announced several new titles for the Switch this morning during a Nintendo Direct Mini. In addition to a new chapter of the Mario Tennis series, it’s also releasing action RPG The World Ends with You: Final Remix, JRPG Ys VIII, fighting game SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy, and Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze.
Mario Tennis made its debut on the Nintendo 64 (not to be confused with Mario’s Tennis on Virtual Boy); its last installment was Wii U title, Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash. Mario Tennis Aces, coming this spring, will feature both competitive gameplay and a story mode, the first since the Game Boy Advance title.
Nintendo’s slate of re-releases — including The World Ends with You and Tropical Freeze — will include new content. The World Ends with You, first released in North America in 2008 on Nintendo DS, is set in a highly stylized, modern-day Japan. Its hero, a boy named Neku, is forced to participate in a dangerous game, unless he wants to be erased from existence. The World Ends with You: Final Remix has been updated for the Switch, and will also include “a sizable new scenario that gets right to the heart of the story.”
Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze, originally released for Wii U, will include a “beginner-friendy” mode to balance out its infamously difficult gameplay. It launches May 4th.
Nintendo also announced a free update for Super Mario Odyssey, Luigi’s Balloon World — two competitive modes about hiding or finding balloons — as well as a Donkey Kong DLC pack for Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle.
