Legendary Entertainment has released a new trailer for Pacific Rim Uprising, the sequel to Guillermo del Toro’s 2013 film Pacific Rim.

In the first movie, humanity faced an invasion of giant monsters called Kaiju, which were beaten back by a small band of heroes piloting giant mechs called Jaegers. In Pacific Rim Uprising, directed by Steven S. DeKnight, the Kaiju have returned a decade later.

The film features cast members Charlie Day, Burn Gorman, and Rinko Kikuchi reprising their original roles. There is also a slew of new characters, including Jake Pentecost (played by The Last Jedi’s John Boyega) who is the son of the deceased former leader of the Jaeger corps, Stacker Pentecost (played previously by Idris Elba). Jake has been living in the shadow of his father’s legacy and expectations, and when the Kaiju return, he joins the fight, aided by a group of inexperienced pilots.

This time around, the alien Kaiju have been purposely drawn back to Earth by someone with an unknown agenda, setting up not just another massive monster versus mech fight, but potentially some big mech versus mech battles as well.

Pacific Rim Uprising opens on March 23rd.
