Marvel’s Iron Fist won’t get a third season. Disney has confirmed that it has canceled the show, but hinted that it might not be the end of the road for the superhero.

Iron Fist is one of several in a joint Marvel/Netflix shared universe, set alongside Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and The Punisher. It follows billionaire Danny Rand (Finn Jones), who reappears after vanishing fifteen years ago, who trained as a monk to become a martial arts master known as the Immortal Iron Fist. The series just aired its second season on Netflix back in September, and coupled with a new showrunner, it improved over its lackluster first season.

In a joint statement, Marvel and Netflix say that it’s thankful to the fans who watched the two seasons, and notes that “while the series on Netflix has ended, the immortal Iron Fist will live on.” The one-shot Defenders series aside, this marks the first time that one of the Netflix Marvel shows has been formally canceled, and the statement holds the door open for the possibility of more adventures for Colleen Wing and Danny Rand.

It’s the first time one of Netflix’s Marvel shows has gotten the ax

Deadline says that while it isn’t likely that the entire Marvel / Netflix shared universe will migrate over to Disney’s soon-to-come streaming platform, it’s possible that that Iron Fist might make the jump over. The platform is currently developing additional shows in the Marvel universe about Loki and the Scarlet Witch, as well as a forthcoming Star Wars show, The Mandalorian.

In a post to Instagram, series star Finn Jones thanked fans for their support, and likewise hinted that it wasn’t the end for the character, saying that “with every end is a new beginning.”

Moreover, Netflix has already locked in additional seasons for the rest of the shared universe: Daredevil’s third season will launch next week (and will likely be back for a fourth), Jessica Jones has already been renewed for a third season, The Punisher is getting a second season, and Luke Cage is expected to get a third season soon.
