At New York Comic Con this afternoon, CBS unveiled the latest trailer for its upcoming second season of Star Trek Discovery showing off what’s next for the crew of the titular ship. The network also revealed that the show would return on January 17th, 2019.
Set a decade prior to the original Star Trek series, Star Trek Discovery follows the crew of the USS Discovery and disgraced Starfleet officer Michael Burnham as they contend with a war against the Klingons, and end up in the Mirror Universe, where they discover a tyrannical version of their world. Our first look at this second season came earlier this summer at San Diego Comic-Con, with a teaser that introduced Captain Christopher Pike (played by Anson Mount), as he takes command of the USS Discovery following the detection of a series of mysterious “red bursts” across the galaxy.
This trailer builds on that: Discovery’s mission is to discover the source of the signals, while Burnam’s half-brother Spock (played by Ethan Peck) is in trouble. He’s apparently been seeing visions of something he called the “Red Angel,” something that Burnham said that she’s seen before, accompanied with a sense that everything would be okay, which might be connected to these red bursts.
Alongside that are plenty of scenes of the Discovery and its crew in various forms of trouble, while Captain Pike repeats several times that Starfleet will never leave anyone behind. We also get our first glimpse of Peck’s take on the character, complete with a full beard that’s a far cry from the distinguished goatee that the character spotted in the Mirror Universe from the original series. We also get glimpses of the Klingons, Number One (Rebecca Romijn), and the return of Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) who appears to be the newest recruit for the clandestine and shady Federation unit, Section 31.
The show will return to CBS All Access beginning on January 17th, 2019, and will air a new episode each Thursday.
