This is a bit unexpected: Avengers: Infinity War won’t be the only big superhero team-up film coming out this spring. When 20th Century Fox released the latest trailer for Deadpool 2, it revealed that the film will introduce the X-Force.
What is completely expected from the trailer is more of Deadpool’s mouthy wisecracks, a lot of bloody violence, and meta-commentary on the nature of superhero films. From the looks of things, Deadpool is still doing the vigilante thing, until Josh Brolin’s Cable arrives with plans to kill a kid who seems to have powers. Cable isn’t letting anything stand in his way — including Deadpool. Violence ensues.
When Deadpool realizes he can’t take on Cable by himself, he brings together a few superheroes and assembles them into a group that he calls X-Force, which he freely admits is a derivative name. We get some glimpses of the X-Men from the first Deadpool —Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead — but there are a few new players here. Domino, played by Zazie Beetz, was already an established part of the film. It’s unclear who Shioli Kutsuna’s purple-haired character is, but possible guesses include Psylocke (who was part of X-Force at one point and does have purple hair and an ability to make psychic weapons) or Surge (who has electrical powers). Terry Crews appears to be playing Bedlam, and Shatterstar and Zeitgeist are in the mix. There’s also a fun shot of Deadpool tooling around in Professor X’s wheelchair. It’s surprising that X-Force is fully assembled in this film, since Fox has already lined up an adaptation of the comic with Netflix’s Daredevil, and The Martian screenwriter Drew Goddard set to write and direct.
Given that the next Avengers team-up is hitting theaters in April, it seems like a ripe target for the film’s sarcasm. Reynolds’ Wade Wilson and T.J. Miller’s Weasel throw in some shots at the endless sequels that superhero films get, hinting that they themselves should just stop at Deadpool 2 before they ruin it.
Deadpool 2 hits theaters on May 18th.
