In an entirely expected turn of events, Ariana Grande showed up on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon to perform her new single “No Tears Left to Cry” this evening. What you might not have seen coming was her choice of instruments: Grande teamed up with Fallon and The Roots to play the song entirely using Nintendo’s Labo line of cardboard Switch accessories. It’s an impressive feat, and we should know, as attempting to program a song and build instruments using Labo proved to be a huge challenge during our testing. We’re not quite sure who handled the programming for tonight’s performance, though.
Of course, this isn’t the first time the Roots have dabbled with video game music on the show. In 2016, just ahead of the launch of Super Mario Run on the iPhone, the band teamed up with Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto to play the iconic Mario Bros theme. Grande, meanwhile, has shown her appreciation for games by appearing as a character in the mobile title Final Fantasy Brave Exvius.
