Bethesda teases Fallout 76 ahead of E3

Bethesda is returning to the wasteland. Ahead of E3 next month, the developer officially announced Fallout 76 — though we don’t know much about the game aside from the name. A brief teaser showed the inside of a fallout shelter, but that’s about it. We expect to hear more about the game at Bethesda’s E3 press conference on June 10th. It’s slated for release on Xbox One, PS4, and PC when it does eventually launch, and it’s being developed by Bethesda Game Studios, the same team behind Skyrim and Fallout 4.

The publisher teased the news yesterday with a cryptic tweet, which was followed by a Twitch stream that lasted for close to a day and showed little more than a Vault-Boy figure in front of a television.

The last major entry in the series, Fallout 4 was released at the end of 2015, and it introduced players to a radiated version of Boston. Bethesda continued to support the game for some time with several large expansions and small add-ons, culminating with the “Nuka World” expansion in 2016. The series also expanded to mobile with the lighthearted strategy experience Fallout Shelter that year, and the game is still going strong with regular updates. (The free-to-play game eventually made its way to PC and Xbox One as well.)

Bethesda, meanwhile, has become one of a few major publishers to take a strong interest in the Nintendo Switch. The publisher has released versions of Skyrim and Doom on the handheld, and next month will see a Switch port for Wolfenstein II.

Fallout 76 is just one of several major game reveals ahead of E3 in June. Bethesda also showed off the post-apocalyptic shooter Rage 2 ahead of the show, while new iterations of Call of Duty and Battlefield were revealed. (The later caused a bit of controversy along the way.) The first E3 keynote kicks off on June 9th. As always, The Verge will be there covering it live.
