With Gears Tactics, Microsoft is moving the long-running series in a much different direction. Announced today at E3, Tactics is a turn-based strategy game set in the Gears universe. Microsoft says that, despite the dramatic shift in genre, the game will still feature plenty of Gears staples, namely brutal action and huge boss fights. But instead of tense, third-person shooter action, the game will feature more considered turn-based battles.
It’s a big departure for Gears of War, but it’s a similar strategy to the one Microsoft took with Halo, expanding the world with a real-time strategy series called Halo Wars. However, unlike Halo Wars 2 — which was designed to work on both the Xbox One and PC — Gears Tactics will be a Windows 10-exclusive, making it the first game in the series created specifically with a PC audience in mind. There’s no word yet on a release date.
