Comedy Central has greenlit a pilot from Reductress co-creators Beth Newell and Sarah Pappalardo for a late-night show adaptation of their women’s media satire site, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Saturday Night Live’s Abby Elliott will serve as the show’s in-character host. The Reductress Hour will aim to translate the withering social commentary that has made the site so beloved by Women Online™ in recent years.
The Reductress website, launched in 2013 and often described (sarcastically or not) as The Onion For Women, has been a balm in an era fraught with attacks on women, from health care access to corporate feminism. It skewers women’s lifestyle blogs and sanguine marketing with headlines like “‘Most Women Lie About Rape,’ Says Man Lying About Rape,” “White Women Thank Themselves for Thanking Black Women Today,” “Glossier Announces New Line of Makeup For Women Not Already Beautiful,” and “QUIZ: Is He Into You, Just a Friend, or Trying to Get You to Join the Democratic Socialists?” According to The Hollywood Reporter, the site attracts 2.5 million unique visitors per month.
Here’s hoping the upcoming pilot turns out better than 2008’s The Onion Movie. (Though considering how well Full Frontal with Samantha Bee has done on TBS, conditions for women’s satire on TV have never been better, so clearing that bar probably won’t be too hard.)
