Nvidia’s new RTX 2000 series of GPUs are designed with ray tracing in mind, a rendering technique that enables real-time light reflections and cinematic effects in games. While we’ve seen some technical demonstrations of what is possible with ray tracing in the past, Nvidia’s Battlefield V demo earlier this week really shows some impressive real world examples of how the company’s RTX cards will make a difference in rendering games and make them a little more movie-like.
In the video (above) you can see a variety of ray-traced reflections, which improve scenes and details in Battlefield V. Existing Screen Space Reflection techniques don’t allow game developers to mirror reflections in the way ray tracing does, and Nvidia and Dice show Battlefield V with the ray-tracing both enabled and disabled to show off the differences to the player point of view.
Reflections look a lot more impressive when they’re ray-traced
Reflections from explosions are far more accurately rendered onto nearby objects like cars, tanks, and even the ground and soldiers in the WW2 first-person shooter game. Flames and explosions will also reflect off of the metal on guns or even diffuse into the wooden parts of older guns in Battlefield V, thanks to the ray tracing support.
Ray tracing could be the biggest graphics jump in a decade, and we’re now waiting to see exactly how many developers opt to support it in upcoming games. Battlefield V, Assetto Corsa Competizione, Control, Enlisted, Justice, Atomic Heart, JX3, MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries, Metro Exodus, ProjectDH, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider will all support ray tracing, with a number of others supporting Nvidia’s new DLSS rendering technique that is part of the new RTX system.
