Alex Garland, known for high-concept science fiction films Ex Machina and this year’s Annihilation, has a new project: Devs, an eight-episode limited series about a computer engineer who begins investigating the company she works for after she suspects that they’re responsible for the death of her boyfriend.

The series will star Sonoya Mizuno (Ex Machina’s silent android Kyoko) as Lily Chan, a software engineer at a “cutting-edge tech company” called Amaya, while Nick Offerman will play Amaya’s CEO, who is obsessed with his company’s secretive development division. Jin Ha, Zach Grenier, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Cailee Spaeny, and Alison Pill will also star in the show.

When he spoke with The Verge earlier this year, Garland noted that he worried that “there may be a mismatch between the stuff I do and opening weekends,” pointing to his work in genre films and the types of films that succeed at the box office. Both Ex Machina and Annihilation were complicated films, dealing with longstanding genre tropes like weird lifeforms and robots in ways that are hard to fit into a two-hour feature film. “I thought maybe in TV, I’d be kind of relieved of that tension” between his storytelling and the demands of the box office. Garland wrote all eight episodes of the show, and will direct each one.

FX says that Devs will premiere sometime in 2019.
