Microsoft could be preparing to return to a black color for its upcoming Surface hardware. While the software giant originally launched its Surface RT in a black “VaporMg” magnesium alloy, the company quickly switched to a silver color for the Surface 2. German site Windows United originally reported that Microsoft will be launching a new black variant for its Surface hardware, and now Thurrott reports this will include both the Surface Laptop 2 and refreshed Surface Pro.

Microsoft is expected to unveil refreshes of both the Surface Laptop and Surface Pro at an event in New York City on October 2nd. The new models will likely include Intel’s latest processors, a switch to USB-C, and a possible new black color variant. If the reports are genuine, this will be the first time a modern Surface Pro has a new color across the entire device, and not just the Type Cover. Microsoft has colored the entirety of its Surface Laptop, but kept a silver body on the latest Surface Pro.

The Verge will be live from Microsoft’s event on October 2nd, and we’ll bring you the very latest news on Surface, Windows, and more.
