Electronic Arts said today that its next Star Wars game, to be called Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, will come out this fall. The company had previously set 2019 as the release window for the story-focused game, which is in development with EA-owned studio and Titanfall creator Respawn Entertainment. But we haven’t gotten anything more concrete until EA disclosed the fall deadline in its quarterly earnings announcement this afternoon.

Given recent news that EA scrapped its narrative-focused Star Wars game under the EA Vancouver studio, it’s good news to hear that Fallen Order is on track for a release later this year, although there is still the remote possibility that EA will decide to push its release date into 2020. That said, with the EA Vancouver project no longer in the works, fans are looking to Respawn to deliver what they hope is a strong, story-focused Star Wars game, given EA’s focus in recent years on the Battlefront franchise.

Respawn’s ‘Star Wars’ team is all-new, while the ‘Titanfall’ crew works on ‘Apex Legends’

Yesterday, Respawn launched its newest game, a battle royale shooter called Apex Legends. According to VG247, the team responsible for that game is compromised almost entirely of the Titanfall crew, while the Star Wars title is currently in development with an entirely new division of Respawn hired specifically for the project.

“The Titanfall team makes Apex Legends,” design director Mackey McCandlish told VG247. “A very one-hand number of people runs Star Wars to help create that team. Myself and others helped interview for that team just to lend some time to help it get off the ground. But I haven’t been heavily involved — it’s off to the races for them.”

Fallen Order is being led by Stig Asmussen, who was game director on God of War 3 after Sony Santa Monica’s Cory Barlog (who returned to be game director on the God of War reboot) initially left the studio. “The game’s development is led by the former director of the God of War series, with a team of veterans from some of the industry’s biggest action-adventure games. It’s very far along in development, and having spent time with it recently myself, it plays spectacularly well,” EA CEO Andrew Wilson said in a prepared statement on the company’s earnings call today. “This game truly captures the fantasy of becoming a Jedi, and we will have a lot more to share soon.”

Little is known about Fallen Order other than that it will be a third-person, single-player action game that’s considered canon in the Star Wars universe. It will feature an unnamed Jedi character during the events after Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.
