Hello Games has announced No Man’s Sky: Beyond, the next free update for its procedurally generated space exploration game. The update will consist of three components, but only one has been announced today: No Man’s Sky Online. Hello Games has offered almost no details on what Online will consist of, but it teases a “radical” new multiplayer experience.

Hello Games says the update will allow “players everywhere in the universe to meet and play together.” But beyond this short blurb, Hello Games isn’t sharing any details about what the update will involve, other than saying that the “changes are an answer to how we have seen people playing since the release of NEXT,” the game’s fourth major update which was released last year.

The developer promises to share more when it “can be precise”

This NEXT update added multiplayer support for up to 16-players, so it’s not immediately obvious what new features No Man’s Sky Online will add. Despite the name, the developer is quick to emphasize that the new update will not turn the game into an MMO. Beyond will be released for free to existing players, and it will not require a subscription fee to play.

Outside of No Man’s Sky Online, Hello Games promises that there’ll be two additional components of Beyond, although it’s not announcing any further details at this time. In a nod to the criticisms that were leveled at the game upon its release, the developer says it will share more “when we know we can be precise.”

No Man’s Sky: Beyond will be the fifth major update for the game when it is released this summer, following last year’s NEXT update. For a more in-depth look at the changes the game has gone through since its original 2016 release, check out The Verge’s 20-entry travel diary of the game.
