The Motorola Droid 4 looks like it could restore the classic, powerhouse ethos to the Droid line. It's rumored to be an LTE world phone on Verizon with an "edge-lit" physical keyboard, qHD LCD 4-inch display, and dual-core 1.2GHz processor. Current rumors suggest it could be released as early as December 8th.

Droid 4 teardown shows a high-quality keyboard and lots of glue

The teardown revealed a few nice pieces of design, like a glass display that's separate from its underlying LCD, meaning that both won't have to be replaced if a screen is shattered. Likewise, the keyboard is apparently of excellent build quality. However, since its contacts are placed directly on the motherboard, it'll be difficult to replace if anything goes wrong. Droid 4 now on sale at Verizon for $199.99, or $99.99 from Amazon Wireless

The day's finally here. Following its announcement last month, and our first glimpse of it at CES, the Droid 4 is now available on Verizon. In case you haven't been following, the handset combines the sliding keyboard that made its predecessors so popular with a dual-core 1.2 GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, LTE, and a slightly larger 1785mAh battery. The styling's slightly updated too, sharing the chopped corners of the Droid RAZR.

We're already seeing a number of discounts on the handset — while you'll pay $199.99 direct from Verizon on a two-year contract, Wirefly will charge you $149.99 and Amazon Wireless is offering it for $99.99. That's a steep discount for an LTE Droid on release day.

Verizon to resurrect double data promotion, offer buy-one-get-one-free Droid RAZR or RAZR Maxx on February 10th

It looks like it's set to be a big weekend for Verizon: not only is it expected to launch the Droid 4, but it's also gearing up for a few major offers. CNET and BGR are both reporting that the earlier rumors of a Droid 4 launch coming this weekend are true, with both sources pegging the handset to launch on Friday for $199.99 with a two-year contract. The phone's the long-awaited successor to the Droid 3, and while it keeps the signature sliding keyboard, it also finally brings LTE support to the line. Beside this, it's also been granted a slight bump in processing speed, and double the RAM over its predecessor. For all of the differences between the two, check out our comparison tool.

Alongside the Droid 4, the same reports (as well as the LA Times) suggest that Big Red's got a few offers up its sleeve. First, the Droid RAZR range will be offered on a buy-one-get-one-free basis, making it easier for you to treat yourself as you shop for Valentine's gifts. The offer includes all colors of the original Droid RAZR, along with the RAZR Maxx which launched last month. Secondly, the carrier's brought back its double data promotion for LTE users, allowing you to get a 4GB data plan for $30 per month. And finally, if you've been looking into grabbing a tablet from Verizon, the reports also suggest that any LTE-capable tablet will be discounted by $100 when you buy any phone at the same time.

Droid 4 hitting Verizon on February 9th for $199?

Gallery Photo: Motorola Droid 4 hands-on pictures

The poor Droid 4. Not only was its original launch delayed a couple of months, but even when it was finally announced in early January it wasn't given a release date or price tag. We may never know the secret story of the physical keyboard-equipped phone and why Verizon has pushed it in the corner so many times, but Droid-Life claims to have heard some concrete information about the phone's arrival. According to their sources, the LTE, dual-core-powered phone will be arriving in Verizon stores on February 9th for $199. Now, we've also heard that it would be $249.99 at one point and that the phone would, you know, launch back in December, so we will take this all with a grain of salt. We'll be keeping an eye out for the official announcement, but if you need your Droid 4 fix, check out our hands-on from CES.

Motorola Droid 3 price cut to $99 ahead of eventual Droid 4 launch

    Motorola Droid 3
    Motorola Droid 3

We know it's coming, but we still don't know when Motorola's Droid 4 will launch at Verizon. In the meantime, the Droid 3 remains your best bet for an Android phone with a keyboard at the carrier and Verizon's making it more enticing by dropping the price to $99. That'll get you the same quality screen and keyboard we saw when it debuted back in July, as well as the same old Android 2.3 OS. In all likelihood, this will be the last hurrah for the Droid 3 — we heard a few weeks ago that Verizon's discontinuing the device by the end of the month to make way for its long-awaited successor.

Motorola Droid 4 and LG Spectrum will have global GSM roaming, eventually

There's a catch, though: the capability won't be available at launch. Verizon says that it's working on "network enhancements" to improve roaming reliability on LTE devices, and it'll be turned on for both phones via software update later in the year, "likely" in the first half. Keep the European vacations off the calendar for the next few months, though, and you should be alright.

Motorola Droid 4 priced at $249.99, according to leaked price list

Motorola's Droid 4 was finally announced at CES, but there was no info given on pricing or a release date. While we still don't know when it'll be out, Droid Life received Verizon's minimum advertised price listing, which showed the Droid 4 for $249.99. It's looking like the cost of LTE and Razr-inspired design is $50 over the Droid 3's price point, assuming this information is correct. Here's hoping that Verizon ends the tease and releases all the info soon.

Droid 4 accessories and new comparison photos emerge

Droid 4 cases (from droid life)
Droid 4 cases (from droid life)

The Motorola Droid 4 has been pictured, thoroughly detailed, and was rumored for a December 2011 release, but the device continues to elude store shelves. And now a little more teasing is in order — some new photos from TechnoBuffalo show what looks like a demo Droid 4 unit sitting alongside an iPhone 4S (hint: the Droid looks bigger). The new shots show white borders around the Droid's keys, but that's the only difference we can spot between these and earlier photos.

Additionally, as Droid Life reveals, some Droid 4 accessories have started showing up at third party Verizon retailers. Of course, there's no indication of an official release, but at least we know that the device is real enough to convince someone out there to make a rubber case for it.

Droid 3, LG Revolution, and all of Verizon's 4G Hotspots rumored to be discontinued in January

    Droid 3
    Droid 3

Despite the fact that the long-anticipated Droid 4 is nowhere to be found, it looks like Verizon is getting ready to End-of-Life its precursor. A tipster, who wrote in under the request of anonymity, let us know the last shipments of the Droid 3 will be arriving in January, only a little more than six months after the phone launched. While it didn't exactly blow us away, the Droid 3 remains one of only a few options for Verizon Android shoppers looking for a keyboard, so this might point to the Droid 4 breaking cover around the same time. Still, it's a little surprising to see the Droid 3 cut after barely six months on the market — hopefully Verizon and Motorola will continue to support owners by upgrading it to Ice Cream Sandwich, but we're not holding our breath.

The tipster also says a number of other devices will be getting the axe, including the LG Revolution (after a scant seven months on the market), the BlackBerry Curve 3G, and the Palm Pre 2. In addition, Verizon is supposedly discontinuing all its available Mi-Fi Hotspots, as well: final shipments of the Novatel LTE Jetpack are coming in January, while both the Samsung LTE Jetpack and ZTE Fivespot won't be restocked at all. This would leave the carrier with zero LTE hotspots on sale, so we'd expect to see a whole new fleet of them coming soon.

Motorola Droid 4 specs leak: 4-inch screen and edge-lit keyboard

Interestingly, the Droid 4 will also apparently come with a "rear cover removal tool," which implies that the 1785mAh battery will be removable — but that it won't be especially easy to get at it. We also have confirmation that the keyboard is "edge lit," which from the photo looks quite a bit brighter than your standard backlit keyboard. The latest rumors peg the release for the Droid 4 on December 8th, which seems perfectly reasonable given that training materials for the smartphone have been distributed to reps already.
