Are small phones back? Probably not, but smartphone manufacturers may finally be realizing that there's a market for them beside the 5-or-so-inch devices that have become standard.
The latest rumor is that Xiaomi is going back to basics with a 4.3-inch smartphone. Remember the weird world of ~2012 where we still thought this was the perfect phone size? A leak on Weibo, caught by Android Central, says the phone is supposed to have a 720p display, a Snapdragon 820 processor, 3GB of RAM, and 32GB of internal storage. It's also supposed to have a 13 megapixel camera and a fingerprint sensor. All in all, those would be pretty sound specs for a smaller device. Its rumored price is $275, which seems low, but is actually a bit more expensive than Xiaomi's recent flagship.
Xiaomi could unveil the phone this month, according to the leak. Given the success of the iPhone SE, it seems likely that Xiaomi and others may soon try to make their way back into the sub-5-inch smartphone world.
Correction June 2nd, 4:50PM ET: This story originally included an image that was supposed to be the leaked phone; it was in fact the Xiaomi Mi 5 — an existing, 5.15-inch phone. That strongly suggests the other details of this leak are fake, too. The image has been removed from this story, and its headline has been changed. The rest of the story remains as is. We apologize for the error.
