Samsung's Gear S3 smartwatch should be coming this month

Samsung has sent out invitations to the launch event for its next wearable device, set to be held on Wednesday August 31st at 6PM CET (12PM ET) ahead of the IFA trade show in Berlin, Germany. The invite shows an abstracted round clock face with the caption "Talk about 3," suggesting we'll see a followup to the Gear S2 smartwatch Samsung launched at IFA last year.

We don't know much about the supposed Gear S3, but the S2 was by far the best smartwatch Samsung has ever made, featuring an understated round design and a clever interface that employed a rotating bezel for navigation. Samsung followed up the S2 with rose gold and platinum versions, as well as a model with 3G connectivity; the company also announced iPhone compatibility all the way back in January, but that has yet to materialize.

Any of these elements could make their way into the Gear S3, but given that the S2 was so radically different from the original Gear S — which looked like an Apple Watch painted by Salvador Dali — it's probably best to keep expectations in check for now.
