Shopify’s new card reader is now shipping in the United States. The Chip & Swipe Reader was completely designed in-house by Shopify, and accepts both swipes and chip-based dips. The reader is a competitor to Square Reader, made by merchant services company Square, which has established a huge presence at small businesses, craft markets, and other places where mobility is important.
Much like Square, the Chip & Swipe is ideally designed to work at a cashier station or out and about with a smartphone, and can be operated using one hand. The reader accepts Mastercard, Visa, American Express, and Discover. “The reader’s versatility meets the needs of merchants selling in person, whether it’s in store, or at a pop-up, festival, or market,” said Dasha Sivkov, product marketing manager at Shopify in a Product Hunt post.
Shopify says on a full charge the reader lasts 400 chip transactions or 700 swipes, and it can pair wirelessly with Android or Apple phones over Bluetooth. The reader is also being offered for free to new Shopify point-of-sale merchants, while existing customers will be able to pick one up for $29.
