Just hours before DJI is set to take the stage at its “Because Life is Big” event in New York, an unannounced Osmo camera has fully leaked online (via DroneDJ). The DJI Osmo Pocket, which has been spotted in numerous leaked images over the last few days, is a small handheld gimbal with attached camera. As implied by its name, the Osmo Pocket is a much smaller model than DJI’s previous Osmo cameras, with a rumored price of $399 that puts it head-to-head with GoPro’s top-end Hero 7 action camera.
DJI’s mechanical gimbal is a much more traditional approach to image stabilization than the impressive HyperSmooth digital stabilization tech found in the GoPro Hero 7 Black. GoPro’s approach gives its Hero 7 camera a much smaller form-factor that can be mounted to anything from helmets to surfboards, whereas the larger Osmo with tiny touchscreen viewfinder in the handle allows for true stabilization, especially for vloggers.
There’s no confirmation yet on the exact specs of DJI’s upcoming camera. Initially there were hopes that it would contain the same 1-inch sensor that could be found in the Mavic 2 Pro drone, but the leaked manuals and packaging suggest an inferior 1/2.3-inch sensor instead. However, with DJI’s event kicking off at 2pm EST later today we won’t have long to wait to find out.
