OnePlus releases Lava Red OnePlus 5T for Valentine’s Day

More pink than red, but that still works for conveying a saccharine sort of romance

As much as I love smartphones, I wouldn’t consider gifting one to be the most romantic gesture ever, though that isn’t stopping phone companies from pumping out special red editions for this year’s Valentine’s Day. After Huawei revealed a lush red Honor 7X earlier today, OnePlus is now unveiling a Lava Red OnePlus 5T. This is the same device that made its debut in China and India late last year, but now it’s coming to Europe and North America while supplies last.

I’ve had one of these new red 5Ts in for testing for a few days, and it is unsurprisingly similar (read: identical, except for the color) to the original black phone that OnePlus launched in November. It’s still a very well-designed and engineered piece of hardware. However, in the time since the launch of the black 5T, OnePlus also released an additional Sandstone White edition, which I consider a major upgrade in terms of handling and ergonomics. The white OnePlus 5T has a much grippier texture on the back that makes it easier to handle without a case. Unfortunately, the red OnePlus 5T sticks to the same finish as the original and doesn’t re-create the Sandstone White’s desirable upgrade. The Sandstone White has since sold out with no plans for a reprise.

There’s a noticeable pinkish hue to this Lava Red device, though that tends to shift with the way the light hits the surface. The ceramic fingerprint reader is color-matched to the aluminum rear shell, but not perfectly; it stands out a little from the rest of the phone. The front is a classic black all around, and it’d be hard to tell you’ve got one of these rouge 5Ts if you ever decide to put a case on it.

Available starting at 10AM local time in each time zone tomorrow, the limited OnePlus 5T Lava Red Edition will come with 128GB of storage and 8GB of RAM and will cost €559, $559, or £499. Any orders of the OnePlus 5T Lava Red Edition before February 8th will get the bonus of free priority shipping, which should get the phone to your door within two to three days. OnePlus is also acknowledging Valentine’s Day by putting out a 15 percent discount when you buy two of the same accessories (though not devices). You can get the benefit of it if you buy two of the very good OnePlus Bullets v2, a selection of OnePlus cases, or any of the OnePlus backpacks.
