The Moto Z3 Play leaked earlier this month in slightly sketchy and grainy images from China, but yesterday, VentureBeat reporter Evan Blass leaked what appears to be a nice-looking press image of the device. The render suggests that the new phone will forego the front fingerprint sensor in favor of one on the side, and will include dual rear-facing cameras. It’ll still be modular, of course, and work with Moto Mods. Blass says the color in the render is “deep indigo.”
We don’t have any specs yet, but it appears to have a taller screen with slimmer bezels at the top and bottom. We enjoyed last year’s Z2 Play, as it was measurably better than its predecessor in nearly every way. We only wished it had a larger battery because the phone included one that was almost 15 percent smaller than the original Z Play’s. Hopefully Motorola remedies that oversight with this new device.
Motorola also got rid of the home button on its new Moto G6 Play, but in that case, the phone has a rear fingerprint sensor to unlock the phone. It looks like the Z3 Play might have a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, which probably wouldn’t create a great user experience. Sony used to use side-mounted fingerprint sensors but got rid of them this year. I don’t know why Motorola would go for the side-mount.
