Earlier this month, the flat, cartoon style of Adventure Time was transformed into a gorgeous 3D world that was quickly torn apart by ugly compression and trippy glitches. Adventure Time's creator had handed the show off for a single episode to filmmaker David OReilly, who wrote, directed, and animated the entire episode by himself. Rhizome spoke with OReilly about how he came to be trusted with the cult series' reins as well as his continued interest in glitch art. Despite the filmmaker's aesthetics, he thinks that his current style will date because it's associated with modern technologies. "We won’t be using those formats forever," OReilly said. "Errors in the 2020s will probably look a lot different."
