There's a more or less familiar pattern with releases from writer-directors Joel and Ethan Coen: we get a critically acclaimed drama, and then the screwball comedy — often critically acclaimed, too. (See: Fargo and The Big Lebowski; No Country For Old Men and Burn After Reading.) Looks like we're now getting the followup to last year's mostly melancholy Inside Llewyn Davis: Universal says the Coens' Hail, Caesar! is coming February 5th, 2016.
Along with the release, Universal has put together an official synopsis for the movie:
Four-time Oscar®-winning filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen (No Country for Old Men, True Grit,Fargo) write and direct HAIL, CAESAR!, an all-star comedy set during the latter years of Hollywood's Golden Age. Starring Josh Brolin, George Clooney, Ralph Fiennes, Tilda Swinton, Channing Tatum, Scarlett Johansson and Jonah Hill, HAIL, CAESAR! follows a single day in the life of a studio fixer who is presented with plenty of problems to fix. The comedy is produced by the Coen brothers under their Mike Zoss Productions banner, with Working Title Films and Eric Fellner and Tim Bevan.
The Coens have dipped into Hollywood criticism before with 1991's Barton Fink, but based on the synopsis, we can guess Hail, Caesar! will be a more playful take; the description sounds straight out of Billy Wilder. We have about 16 months to speculate, so start your engines.
