Panasonic just unveiled a 4K Windows 8 tablet at CES 2013 and we've managed to get an early hands-on. The huge 20-inch tablet includes an optical stylus that allows you to navigate the Windows 8 tiled UI and touch up photos on the device. Panasonic isn't revealing exact specifications just yet, but running at at 4K resolution at its booth today it was stunning to see images on such a display.
Normally reserved for TVs, this tablet is targeted at photographers, designers, and architects according to Panasonic. A built-in Windows 8-style application imports images from a digital camera and Panasonic supplied a number of 4K images to sample the delights of the display at its booth. This is a huge tablet though, if you can call it that, so it's not exactly portable. During my early look at the device I noticed that the back of the device heats up a lot, so if this device ever makes it to the market there's still some work to be done to make this fully usable. Either way, it's a crazy 4K Windows 8 tablet, and we'll probably see a lot more of them at CES this week.

Save that for when Samsung releases the Galaxy Note 16 in a few years, and it looks the same as this :P
By vibrunazo on 01.08.13 1:41pm
That could be possible. A few years ago who would have thought a 5.5" phone would be this popular?

Was about the resolution, not so much the size
By VoxMediaUser599563 on 01.08.13 3:46pm
3840 × 2560, 235ppi
By mados123 on 01.08.13 11:55pm
ppi isn’t gospel. That’s full resolution on a 14mp photo. What monitor does that again?
By VoxMediaUser599563 on 01.09.13 9:44am
3840×2160=8.29Mp.

No, ppi is gospel.
84" 4K TVs are nice, but they are just as dense as a plain old 42" 1080p HDTV. So the “Retina” viewing distance is the exact same for both sets.
Now when we look at 4K in a 20" display, that moves the “Retina” viewing distance much closer to the display. That effect is captured by pixel density, which is measured with ppi.
This isn’t some opinion. This is just how the human eye works.

and naysayers says Windows 8 can’t run beyond 1080p. BURN!
By sushirobot on 01.08.13 7:09pm
I’ve never heard that before. I’m running 2560×1440 with Windows 8 on this computer.

Great, but when can I get a 4K 24" monitor for my desktop?
By sirjimbob on 01.08.13 1:26pm
2001
By ajerman on 01.08.13 1:35pm
not really
By VoxMediaUser953123 on 01.08.13 1:44pm
Yes really, go look up the IBM T220. I’m using one right now. It’s higher than 4K and it’s 22".
By ajerman on 01.08.13 1:54pm
The T220 is pretty rare. Do you have a T221?
It really was ahead of its time. The response time is a little low so there’s ghosting but otherwise its IPS panel holds up pretty well against modern LCDs.
By Netwebber on 01.08.13 2:30pm
Yeah, it’s definitely not up to par with what new 4K displayed will be like. The native refresh rate when it’s at that high of a resolution is 41 Hz which works for it’s purpose, but isn’t as good for media or gaming. Still a quite impressive display though.
It doesn’t really have many markings (just Type 9503 on the bottom), but it’s one power cable, so it must be a T221 actually. They are rare and very expensive, but I happen to work for the company that made them and am one of a few people to have snagged one, haha.
I’d be interested to know if Windows 8 does better DPI scaling in desktop mode than previous versions of Windows. It looks like it does in Metro, but I never even run this monitor at it’s native resolution because of Windows’ AWFUL DPI scaling.
By ajerman on 01.08.13 2:48pm
Related and drool-worthy now that I know what these displays are. Thanks.
By herki on 01.08.13 3:36pm
WOW, that’s a hell of a setup. That’s probably the most expensive display setup I’ve ever seen on someone’s desk.
By ajerman on 01.08.13 4:07pm
Got nothing on Vega’s setup
By Rezel on 01.09.13 8:13pm
Holy shit. Sir, here is a check with my name on it. Write down any number on this piece of paper and I will pay it.
By jrnay on 01.09.13 3:44am
I’d love to see how much heat this setup pump out. My T220 runs pretty hot… this would be like a freakin’ sauna!
By btek on 01.09.13 10:13am
This. Why should laptops and tablets have all the high-density fun, especially when my desktop actually has the hardware to play games at that resolution?
By ricequackers on 01.08.13 1:47pm
If you’re willing to sacrifice having giant monitor the CarPC community has created enough demand for tablet LCD controllers that they’ve being manufactured in China. Doing the same thing for the iPad 3’s display would be a lot of work but possible.

I’m going to buy these things and have them placed on my floors. Live Tiles, y’know.
