After months of hype, Netflix has finally announced the release date for the new season of Arrested Development. In a post on Twitter, Netflix says the new season will debut on May 26th with 15 new episodes — one more than we were expecting. The show, which began life on Fox, is part of a Netflix drive to bring more original content to its streaming video platform. That drive includes the well-received political drama House of Cards and Eli Roth's Hemlock Grove. All told, Netflix wants at least five original shows a year as it bids to "become HBO faster than HBO can become [Netflix]".

This better not have the problem Community season 4 has. In other words, it needs to have the same style and same feel as the first three seasons. But even if it doesn’t, this is the most underrated comedy of all time.

This has concerned me a bit, too. I hate to see the series milked just for money and for the jokes to all be reruns, but there’s a ton of talent in this cast (and David Cross). Should still wind up being funny even if it’s not perfect.

How is it underrated?
Literally everyone loves it. It was little watched in its time, buts it has grown huge since.
By techee44 on 04.04.13 8:16am
Yeah, to say Arrested Development is underrated these days is a misnomer. Maybe in 2005 but not today. In fact didn’t they win a buch of awards? Kinda the same situation as 30 Rock, critically acclaimed but not very many people watched it outside the die hard fans and getting signed for each new season was a little unsure.

It’s no different than Firefly. A show that wasn’t appreciated at the time, but grew into a cult favorite.
That’s just how these things tend to be.

A problem is the shows (both of them, which I was a fan of from their premieres) don’t get the mega ratings right off the bat, so they get ignored/shuffled around in the line up making them all but impossible for anyone to watch.
Even being a fan of both, I eventually gave up on trying to watch both as their line up changes were all over the place to the point that I eventually had no clue when they would be on. And I’d just catch both randomly when Fox (or a Fox related channel) would air them in a marathon (which I know they did a few times very early on with Arrested Development).
I just think it’s a Fox thing though. Every show they’ve cancelled early on has become a hit later on. Some of that is word of mouth gaining new fans, some of it just seems to be Fox not giving anything a chance.

Terrible scheduling is definitely fox’s issue.
That’s really the fault of Firefly’s demise. If it had gotten advertizing and a consistent schedule it would have picked up fans who otherwise don’t watch sci-fi (which is one of the strong parts of this show).

I’d like to give an honorable mention to NBC’s fumbling of Freaks and Geeks as well. Way ahead of its time and picked up by the wrong network. Literally too cool for school I guess.

its not underrated its cult

It is going to be different, they’ve said as much. The episodes can be watched in any order, there’s no key ongoing plotlines (though a lot of references back and forth between the episodes that you’ll pick up on). It’s designed to be watched on Netflix rather than TV. Each episode also focuses mainly on one character (but Michael is in every episode).
They’ve gone as far as to say “don’t call this season 4”. So yeah, it’s going to be different. But I think that’s probably for the best, they can’t pretend like it’s just the 4th season to the show like nothing’s changed.

It can be “different” and still “good” and still feel like the show. If the personalities are there and the “plot” works out well, I’m all for it.
By bfunk1978 on 04.04.13 11:45am
I don’t like the sound of this… the strong ongoing plotline is one thing that differentiated Arrested Development from other comedies. Arrested Development wouldn’t be nearly as funny with interchangeable episodes a la Two and a Half Men or whatever. Besides, what’s the point if it’s on Netflix? Who watches episodes out of order on Netflix?
By kreg37 on 04.04.13 3:01pm
I think the point was to work around everyone else’s work schedule. They’re all doing other things, too.
By bfunk1978 on 04.04.13 3:45pm
There’s still a plot that will link the episodes together. It’s not like they’re all islands within the AD universe like Two and a Half Men. All the episodes are addressing the build up to the Arrested Development movie from a different character’s perspective. You can watch them in any order, because they’re all happening at the same time.
By jhall4 on 04.04.13 4:26pm
save the plot for the A D movie :D
By Jessypheng on 04.05.13 4:41am
I have high doubts about that. The shift in Community came because Dan Harmon was axed as executive producer and showrunner. Mitch Hurtwitz, the creator and showrunner of AD, is on board for these episodes.
By gadgetguy03 on 04.04.13 9:22am
You neckbeards are all wrong. Season 4 of Community has been good.
By SwoleBro on 04.04.13 2:07pm
Season 4 is not nearly as good as seasons 1-3. Troy and britta are dating, but from the way they interact in everyday situations, you wouldn’t know it. Jeff should be looking forward to getting his degree, but hasn’t mentioned it since the 1st episode. Shirley should be close to hers too, nothing.
Besides that, the episodes have been pre lackluster. Their replay value is not nearly what it used to be. I can see the difference that Dan Harmon had on the overall feel of the show. Something feels hollow about this season of community.
I’m glad they won Hulu best in show though. sixseasonsandamovie
