Google: 900 million Android activations to date, 48 billion app installs

900 million Android devices have been activated since Google's mobile operating system launched to consumers four and a half years ago. The impressive stat was revealed by Android / Chrome boss Sundar Pichai on stage at Google I/O 2013. Chairman Eric Schmidt has forecasted that Android could cross the billion activation mark by the end of this year.

Pichai also shared new details on Google Play's momentum with consumers: over 48 billion apps have been installed thus far — not far off from the 50 billion Apple's iOS platform is about to reach. 2.5B of those came in the last month alone. Revenue per user has also doubled year-over-year.

And here’s an Android for you.. and for you..

1 Billion by Fall. This is insane growth!

12.9% of the entire world population. Jesus…

Ummm … wait a minute … let’s not get TOO carried away!

How many Android devices do you currently own? (I have a Nexus 4 and a Nexus 7.) So maybe it’s only 6% – 7% of the world’s population? Still, not bad …

But how many Android devices have you previously owned that are now discarded or lying idle somewhere? (I’ve had half a dozen phones / tablets, some of which are now gathering dust, some of which I sold on eBay, but I have no idea whether they are still “alive”.)

And if you do a lot of “rooting and romming” – have you noticed how many “Devices” end up in your Play store account? I wonder if Google counts these as “activations”?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not accusing Google of fudging the figures, but “activations” =/= “current users”.

You know what’s cool? 1 Billion activations.

The growth is amazing.

Off topic: Did IO kill The Verge? :o

yeah saw that too.

Also, Feedly isn’t picking up on The Verge’s RSS feed. None of today’s posts are showing up.

They’ve been experiencing some issues with the site. You can follow the progress on their support twitter account.

1 million of those are all from flashing ROMs on my GS3….

*GRUMPYCAT *No!

“For those wondering, we count each device only once (i.e., we don’t count re-sold devices), and “activations” means you go into a store, buy a device [and] put it on the network by subscribing to a wireless service."

:p

That’s a lot!!.. well done Google.. ( still don’t like you )

That is not a small number…

Isn’t it for app installs and not downloads though?

“fortunately fucking”

And howmuch $ google made from those 900m activations and 48b app downloads ?

Depends how much advertising Google are pushing out to android devices and services. My next question would be how much MS has creamed off OEMs from all those devices!
