'12 Monkeys' TV series pilot could start filming in November, says Deadline

12 monkeys

Syfy has ordered a pilot for an adaptation of Terry Gilliam's 1995 film 12 Monkeys, Deadline reports. The series was first revealed last month, when The Hollywood Reporter said that original 12 Monkeys producers Chuck Roven and Richard Suckle had successfully pitched a TV version of the classic film. Now, there's word that Syfy will soon be producing a 60-minute pilot, penned by Terra Nova and Nikita screenwriters Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett. A short season is planned after the pilot, but there's still no sign of who might appear onscreen; if the network and producers can agree on a cast, filming will tentatively start in November.

So far, everything we've heard about the series indicates that it will follow the basic premise of 12 Monkeys, with a time-traveler sent back to study the spread of a deadly disease. Unfortunately, that's all we've heard, so it's hard to say what relationship the series will have with the 1995 original or with La Jetée, the 1962 French short that inspired Gilliam's film.

The film was great, but uber depressing. It’ll be interesting to see how a TV tie-in would work. I like both Terra Nova and Nikita, so this should be a superb combination of writing prowess. Needless to say, I’m excited!

Terra Nova was serviceable while it lasted, but Nikita finally reached too far for me to continue watching. The whole Terminator arm put me over the edge.

Just leave that great movie be!

They’re not doing anything to the movie. It still exists, and you can still watch it, and it will be unchanged.

Say that to Star Wars.

SyFy? I hope this doesn’t turn into a Sharknadoishly bad creation because it has a whole lot of potential to be great.

Also, I would like to say bring back Lexx.

12 Sharkey’s?

One of my favorite Sci-Fi movies of all time…

GET HYPE

YES MY BODY IS READY FOR THIS

inb4 they create a horror. And i’m not talking about the genre.

7 comments in and nobody references La Jeteé, the film that inspired 12 Monkeys.

It was referenced in the body of the article itself…

I swear I didn’t see it in the blurb above.

Will this be a re-imagination because we know the ending already.

This can only be a bad thing, reflecting poorly a great story that made a very good movie.

penned by Terra Nova…

That’s it, I’m out!
