Nintendo confirms it’s working on a Mario movie with the studio behind Minions

Mario, meet Minions. Today Nintendo confirmed reports that it’s working on an animated Super Mario movie with Illumination, the animation studio behind movies like Despicable Me and Minions. The Wall Street Journal previously reported on the deal back in November. There’s little in the way of details about the film, but it’s being co-produced by Shigeru Miyamoto — the creator of Mario and many other iconic Nintendo characters — and Chris Meledandri, best-known for his work on the Despicable Me franchise.

There’s no word on when the movie will hit theaters, but Super Mario fever is at a high following the successful launch of Super Mario Odyssey on the Nintendo Switch, which the company says has sold more than 9 million copies since its debut in October.

with the studio behind Minions

Now I have mixed feelings about this.

Then you remember the 1993 Super Mario Bros. movie, and realize there’s really nowhere to go but up

lets be honest here, that mario movie was a low point but then we got dragon ball evolution so anything can ONLY be better.

I loved that movie growing up haha.

the only thin they got right in that mario movie was the bob-omb

Oh, it can get worse. I’d take 1993 Mario over something like, say, the Animoji Movie every single time.

Minions was crap, but the original Despicable Me was actually a great movie, so I’m hopeful.
Plus, Mario’s cartoony styling I think fits in with Illuminations visual style very well.

Don’t know if I could handle Mario + Minions. Or, even worse, Mario + Rabbids + Minions shudder

Agree with you on the original Despicable Me. The second one wasn’t bad either, but the third one I though was meh. The main reason why I hate the studio was Secret Life of Pets.

Yea, Secret Life of Pets was basically Toy Story but with pets instead of toys

I wish it was Disney

Thought: Apple and Nintendo have a great partnership, and Apple wants original content. Apple getting the rights for a Nintendo franchise like The Legend of Zelda or Splatoon could be huge for both brands.

Please no

Minions in themselves are amusing enough in small doses.

We got over-Minioned. Minioned Out. Minion Saturated.

Will never surpass the 1990s original.

You forgot this.

First Nintendo-Land now a movie. I think Nintendo’s partnership with Universal will continue to broaden.

Nintendo realizes they are the new Disney in terms of their IP & its recognition. More kids know about Mario than they know about Mickey Mouse.

I’ll venture a guess you don’t have young kids….

if this does well..maybe a zelda movie?

A zelda movie would actually makes sense as there is a story to work with.

Mario doesn’t really seem like an ideal movie IP. Not sure what they do with it to make it halfway compelling beyond the novelty factor. The best idea I could see is something that blends Mario with real world in the vein of Roger Rabbit

Tbh I would take a Metroid movie over EITHER of these.

I am qualified to do the voice acting for Link. Please put me in touch with the studios

The idea is intriguing, though I’m not sure if I’d rather watch a Zelda show or just play one of the games…

Now put me in a Ready Player One simulation of a Zelda world and I’d be ecstatic.

Is it too much to ask that Mario not talk? Or at least tone down the over-exaggerated squealy Italian accent?

The fact that Universal Studios was getting a nintendo section heavily implied these kinds of tight tie-ins with Universal.

Here’s hoping it’s not like Disney where they buy out the companies they make rides for. (Look at the Star Wars, Avatar, and Indiana Jones rides as examples of later Disney acquisitions.)
