Microsoft has made Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) free to download and play. The software giant notes that the full 1.0 release of PUBG for Xbox is “free for a limited time,” and you can download the game free immediately from the Microsoft Store. Microsoft had originally promised “big news” for PUBG fans at the company’s X018 show on Saturday, and it looks like the free PUBG promotion is part of that. Microsoft’s free promotion is set to last between November 8th and November 11th, and PUBG originally appeared in Xbox Game Preview last year, priced at $29.99.

Microsoft’s free promotion comes at a key time for PUBG. Rumors suggest the game is about to launch on Sony’s PlayStation 4 next month. If the reports are genuine then it means Microsoft paid for a year of PUBG exclusivity. During that year, performance issues have plagued the game on the base Xbox One, and PUBG is currently sitting at three out of fives stars for reviews in the Microsoft Store.

Microsoft is also making Pro Evolution Soccer 2019 free for this weekend plays event. You can download Pro Evolution Soccer 2019 free from the Microsoft Store right now.

Update, November 7th 12:30PM ET: Microsoft has now revealed these games will only be free and playable between November 8th and November 11th.

While MS may well have given Bluehole games some inducement, it’s probably just as likely that this exclusivity is due to the Xbox One being the only console offering a ‘game preview’ or early access type service.

During that year, performance issues have plagued the game on the base Xbox One, and PUBG is currently sitting at three out of fives stars for reviews in the Microsoft Store.

Worked out well for MS, though. The game has been a strong seller, and is still among the top played Xbox games.

performance issues will persist, but it will sell quite well on PS4 too.

Nonsense about xbox being the only one with early access etc.
Ps4 has had fortnite since day one and it was always advertised as a preview

That’s kind of the point though, fortnight was an exception to the rule that Sony has allowed for Epic. Paragon was the same way. Otherwise, Sony has been very public that they don’t do early access.

Think I remember seeing a Game Theory episode way back when that talked about how being in beta allows Epic to skirt policies in different stores that would prevent them from doing weekly updates if it were an "actual" release. Would be fun to see what kind of magical garbage would be produced if there was a section in the store for things that haven’t gone though some approval process. Browse/Play at your own risk.

Sounds great that it’s free, but how free is free? Like do you get it permanently or do you get it as a trial? It’s great that they are trying to make PUBG more accessible to more Xbox players. The game still feels like it is in early access. The graphics loading as you land with all them being lower resolution still makes it feel like early access. I can’t blame them since, they are a small company for not making the transition on consoles more smoothly. Still, the game is great and I will recommend it to people that want a great game with good mechanics.

You get to keep it for free. Not sure if Gold will be required to have access though.

Yup. Gold is a requirement – not sure how else you can play online without a Gold subscription anyway?

Yes finally I dont have to play crappy fortnite or h1z1.
We can finally enjoy a real battle royale and a better than decent multiplayer game.
It would be nice if we could get cross play so I can play on my xbox one x with my elite controller.
This will be one of ps4 tops games if it comes out this year.
I see rdr2,call of duty and pubg on top of sales charts in 2018 for ps4.

Don’t think they’re free to keep.

A great weekend awaits all our customers. Xbox is happy to invite all Xbox Live members without a Gold membership to play online with all their friends for free during our Free Play Days For All event from November 8 to 11 on your Xbox One.
…but they are only playable with full functionality and available from November 8-11 (US Pacific Time)…

Huh, so it’s just a weekend thing? That’s lame.

PUBG is free to keep. Since you always need Gold to play online they are just allowing non gold members to play online this weekend and after that you will need gold to keep playing as it normally is.

No, it isn’t. Free play weekends have never worked that way on Xbox.
