Microsoft partners with Discord to link Xbox Live profiles

Microsoft is partnering with popular gaming chat app Discord. The partnership will see Xbox Live profiles appear within Discord profiles, allowing console and PC gamers to find friends more easily. Discord already supports a number of profile connections, including Facebook, Twitter, Steam, and Skype. Xbox One owners will be able to link their Discord profile directly to an Xbox Live profile from a console, and PC players will be able to do the same through the regular Discord app.

The integration is only limited to profiles, so Xbox Live party chat and Discord audio chat will not be linked. Discord users will be able to see which games Xbox Live friends are playing, though. Microsoft and Discord are both rolling out the profile linking today, and Xbox Insiders will soon be able to preview the profile link from the Xbox One dashboard.

I can’t wait to link PSN and XBL

You have me…

The integration is only limited to profiles, so Xbox Live party chat and Discord audio chat will not be linked.

…and you’ve lost me.

I’m wondering if that will ever be possible. They’d be needing to use the same protocol or backend, right?

Not necessarily. It would add overhead, but you can theoretically translate from one stream to another. Like calling into a VOIP meeting from a regular phone.

Feels like that would take far more integration that Xbox would be willing to do. Even if Discord gets big, it doesn’t really benefit Microsoft that much to have discord users hooking into the system. A cool thing for players though, I’d like to see it happen.

seems like there up to something.

That’s nice, I guess.

Now if only Discord would support touch input on PC…

This type of partnerships are a better option for MS than trying to take on a competition head on. Instead of fighting other platforms like Steam (or Discord in this instance), MS can take a platform they are good at (Xbox Live) and partner up with another good platform and expand the audience.

I would love to see the XPA platform integrated with Steam as well now. PC audience already prefer Steam and Discord and allowing games to be purchasable and shared with Steam only enhances MS reach into gaming.

Wouldn’t be surprised if MS buys out discord

Exactly what I’ve been thinking lately.

it seems unlikely. Not unless they just combine Discord into Xbox live and make Xbox Live the default app for both console and PC. I think Discord and Xbox Live can co-exist especially if they continue to partnership with future integration.
