Facebook is completely redesigning Messenger to make it simple again

Facebook is giving Messenger a major design overhaul, promising a much simpler and cleaner user experience after years of jamming the chat app full of superfluous features like games.

“When you’re messaging, you really want a simple and fast experience,” Mark Zuckerberg said during the company’s F8 keynote. “We’re taking this moment to completely redesign Messenger to focus on these ideas.” Zuckerberg again reiterated the “clean” and “fast” nature of the revamped Messenger app before moving on in the keynote.

Messenger VP David Marcus said that the refreshed app is coming “very, very soon” and is something the team has been working on since the start of this year. It’s going to have a dark mode, which is a nice addition in our growing world of OLED smartphones.

The bottom navigation has been simplified to three central tabs that focus on communication. Icons for the camera and video chat remain present at the upper right of the app, but everything looks much more streamlined. It looks like a chat app again. I’m guessing that the number of people who’ve switched to Messenger Lite (or competing messaging apps) might’ve made Facebook realize that something had to change about the bloated mess that is Messenger today.

It’s not a clean experience as long as it keeps the redundant stories at the top

Because nobody uses the stories it’s just an indication of who’s online.
But you can already see if someone from a recent conversation is online from her avatar so it actually doesn’t matter

I don’t give a flip about who is scrolling through FBat this very second.

Some of us, however, do.

And stories is a complete waste for that. It’s supposed to be so much more.

So much more – like able to be hidden!

And the mid-conversation ads.

Is this what passes off as innovation? What is Facebook even doing anymore?

Innovation is for nought if you are ruining your user experience to chase every new fad. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Snapchat all need to streamline once more because their apps are bloated, confusing, inconsistent trash.

Lol Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn. Have you looked into their UX. I think you don’t know how to do a proper UX design. Say that only to Facebook

Why does everything constantly have to be innovative? That’s what got us into this mess in the first place.

The fact that Messenger has to be a separate app still annoys me. I simply refuse to install two apps for a social network I already keep at arms length anyway.

I honestly prefer messenger as a separate app, as I only have Facebook because it’s the "preferred" (read: only) means of communication used by People i know.

It’s nice for people who don’t want the Facebook app.

Yes.

I uninstalled the FB app (Although I have the Safari shortcut on my homescreen) and usually use Messenger.

I have to say it’s a pretty good experience

I did that, but I started to miss gifs and such. So now I’m back, but just turned the notifications off.

I rarely use Facebook these days but because most people I know still have an account, it’s easier to just use messenger.

That’s great! I use Facebook, a lot. I find it amusing and a great way to connect with people. I’m sure it’s not for everybody, though. =\ can’t please them all..

I just want Messenger to work on a mobile browser.

I think I’m very, very, very far from alone in that at least 90% of my Facebook usage is Messenger.
If there was a worthwhile Events app and/or Groups app, I’d never open the Facebook app itself ever again.
Fuck, what a dream

I switched to Messenger Lite long ago,

It was faster, lightweight, more free phone ram, simple chat app

Messenger full app was very confusing due to a lot of features placed at different places.

Does it do animated gifs yet? That was a deal-breaker for me.

That’s all the redesign needs to be.

Overtime I see why they separated the messenger app and simplifying it will make it a much better experience. They need to redesign the Facebook app while they’re at it, both are bogged down by a ton of useless mess, and they take a bunch of space.

surprisingly I use Messenger only in my Surface… I hate it in my phone
