Instagram will now filter out bullying comments

Instagram is upgrading its offensive comment filter today, expanding it to automatically filter out bullying comments “containing attacks on a person’s appearance or character, as well as threats to a person’s well-being or health.”

The comment filter was originally introduced last year, with a focus on toxic and divisive comments, but the update today broadens what gets hidden to include the aforementioned types of comments. Users will also be able to disable the filter if they’d like to see the unedited comments on their feeds as well, but it will be enabled by default.

For now, the new anti-bullying filter is only launching for English, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, German, Russian, French, Japanese, and Mandarin comments, and Instagram plans to offer it in other languages in the future, too.

Correction: The new anti-bullying feature will be offering for multiple languages at launch, not only English as this port originally stated.

But muh free speech!

Instagram is not in the business of free speech or politics (FB scandal aside) is in the advertising business. They need the users profile to be as "pretty a positive" posible to let the brands appear in a positive light.

I know, I was joking. Celebs and high profile users were already deleting comments, blocking users, and turning comments off on certain pictures anyway.

Insta isn’t shutting down the flow of ideas into a "safe space," they’re removing idiots who post dumb personal comments. There is no right to be an asshole on the internet.

Instagram isn’t a public place; it’s a privately owned platform. They have every right to filter users posts in whatever way they want. If you don’t like it, vote with your feet.

Snowflakes I say.

Right. People who get their feefees all aflutter because some lady told some jokes that were too close to true at an annual televised event.

I don’t get all the fuss, it was just locker room talk after all.

what about a chronological feed? As someone with no followers this new feature doesn’t really matter to me, or any instagram user with a private account.
