Actor Robert Downey Jr. and his wife, producer Susan Downey, are making an artificial intelligence documentary series on YouTube, the company announced today. The series will have eight episodes that are each an hour long and it’s set to air on the paid membership-based YouTube Red platform next year.

The series is still untitled, but we do know that Robert Downey Jr. will host and narrate the series, which will feature scientists, philosophers, and other experts in AI. YouTube says the series will explore how AI transforms the way we work and live in the present and future. The series will be executive produced by the Downeys through their production company Team Downey.

“Robert and I share a curiosity for AI, a complicated and often polarizing subject,” Susan Downey explained in a statement. “Our aim is to explore AI through a lens of objectivity and accessibility, in a thoroughly bold, splashy, and entertaining way.”

It’s not the first time that the Iron Man and Avengers star has expressed an interest in pioneering technology. According to a chapter in Elon Musk’s recent biography, during the production of 2008’s Iron Man, which kicked off Downey Jr.’s run playing tech billionaire Tony Stark, he requested a Tesla Roadster be placed inside Stark’s workshop to demonstrate the character’s technological prowess and foresight. And in 2016, Downey Jr. jokingly offered to voice Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s AI-based personal assistant the executive wanted to build in his own home.

I would have more respect if they didn’t stuff it behind a pay wall.

What’s the matter Robert, don’t have enough money?

Someone still has to fund the project, just because he is rich does not mean he need to do it for free.

Exactly. Even if HE did it for free, the rest of the staff and crew still need to be paid.

Yeah I’m okay with him getting funding to produce this documentary. There is no reason he should self fund it. If YouTube stepped in and offered to fund the series given that it will appear on YT Red, it’s better than it not getting made at all.

People gave Zach Braff all kinds of shit when he Kickstarted his next movie. Like, he’s supposed to come up with $10-20 million to fund a new movie? I don’t think so.

Chances are he pitched a series to multiple outlets or was approached to do one. This isn’t the case of someone wanting to build a YouTube presence like Will Smith & his team, it’s far more traditional.

It’s not about the money, it’s about youtube having exclusives. Everyone loves Iron Man so he gets a tv show for him.

HINT You can still get it from certain websites HINT

HINT Like? HINT

I read this as:

I want everything for free and will throw a tantrum until I get it (or until I realise everyone is ignoring me)

No can do, comrade

No. All the documentaries concerned with actual intelligence are still free to view on the site.

You have no clue about the cost of production and effort involved.
Go watch cat videos – they’re free

I guess Paul Bettany was a little too on the nose?

Tony Stark launching a YouTube series about Artificial Intelligence is exactly the nerd news I needed this morning. Now I can only hope Paul Bettany shows up

Stop trying to make youtube red happen, it’s no gonna happen

Never underestimate the power of the Cobra-Kai

I guess he was tapped for this because he’s the closest thing to a creator of AI in most peoples minds that we have?

sounds like a continuous (rip off) of ‘One Strange Rock’
but that’s just me.
