The new Google Lens has come to the Sony Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact

Google Lens is expanding to more devices’ native camera apps, including the Sony Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact, as spotted by AndroidPolice. To activate the integration, users will only need to update their Google app in the Play Store.

The upgraded Google Lens, which is the company’s artificial intelligence platform for parsing the real world, was first announced back in 2017. Google then announced at its annual I/O developer conference earlier this month that Lens would be integrated directly into the smartphone camera on Google-made devices and top-tier Android handsets, instead of just living inside Google Photos. The company said at the time that the platform was coming to 10 different Android devices initially, but did not specify which ones besides Pixel devices.

The new Google Lens combines the best of the company’s algorithms for object recognition and natural language processing with Google Search, so that its software can identify books and clothes and pull up relevant shopping results. It also has a smart text selection feature that lets you copy text from real-life documents.

Previously, Google had only revealed the manufacturers of those additional 10 devices: LG, Motorola, Xiaomi, Sony Mobile, HMD / Nokia, Transsion, TCL, OnePlus, BQ, and Asus. Google responded to a request for more details, saying, “More [devices] will be rolling out on an ongoing basis.”

Lens has been working on Essential for a few weeks now. I’m on the Beta channel of the Google App but IIRC it started working in a 8.4 version release, we are now up to 8.5. It is pretty finicky though, if lightning isn’t on point it won’t pick up on an object or misidentify it.

I actually found Lens useful for the first time yesterday.
Took a picture of the retail box for some headphones I wanted to buy, and googled them.
Saved me typing in their name.

Okay. Not that useful.

Ahahahaha exactly!

Google Lens is horrible. Doesn’t even recognize a glas (plate) or a toy car (carpet???).
