Spider-Man for PS4 shows off its open-world web-swinging in new trailers

Just a few months out from Spider-Man’s planned September 7th release date, Sony and Insomniac Games are blowing the lid off what to expect from the swinging superhero’s video game return, with a deep dive during Sony’s E3 presentation of gameplay, combat, and the all-important web-swinging in a new extended trailer.

Sony first unveiled Spider-Man from Insomniac Games back at E3 2016, and it showed off a preview of early gameplay footage at last year’s show. But today’s preview gives a deeper look at how combat will work in the upcoming game. There are also appearances from a whole chunk of Spider-Man’s rogue gallery of villains, including Electro, Rhino, Scorpion, Vulture, who all escape from the maximum security prison “The Raft” in the sequence, likely setting up encounters for the rest of the game.

Showcased in the trailer were some of Insomniac’s three key focuses for gameplay: the acrobatic, combo-based combat, the variety of gadgets that players will have at their disposal, and of course, the web-swinging, which looks to leverage Insomniac’s skills from games like Sunset Overdrive for a thrilling traversal mechanic.

Marvel’s Spider-Man is out exclusively for the PlayStation 4 on September 7th.

Spiderman: arkham city

Enemies seem like they move way too slow compared to you to be a threat.

That’s literally Spider-Man vs enemies

Doesn’t mean it’s the best decision from a game design perspective though.

It is just fine, and was really good in Spiderman too as well. As long as harder enemies aren’t as slow. Regular guys need to make you feel like a hero.

I was thinking this exact same thing, 15 years ago, that particular gameplay mechanic made Spider-Man 2 the best.

Personally, I was never a fan of Spider-Man 2’s combat either ¯\(ツ)/¯.

Spider Man: Total Exhaustion

Who was it at the end?

Doctor Octopus maybe?

If you couldn’t tell then I’m not telling you

Open world? I thougth he was only in Manhattan

Open world doesn’t mean global, it just means that your character can freely roam around the map they built instead of just running a campaign.

That looked really good! The webswinging is topnotch and combat looks great. Will definitely be looking out for reviews.

I am so done with console exclusives – there is no reason for it…………..other than to be total a..holes. All games these days can work on either console, or PC, yet Sony are the only ones that are completely dependent on their exclusives, so the rest of us lose. FU Sony – I am not buying your console (no matter how much my son wants MLB The Show!!!)

Microsoft also has exclusives, especially on the xbox 360. People can choose either console but usually pick one over the other based on things like exclusives and what their friends have. Exclusives are good for sales and will continue to be for the foreseeable future.

… yet Sony are the only ones that are completely dependent on their exclusives …

Because I’ve been having a blast with Forza, Zelda, Gears, Halo, Smash Bros and Mario on my PS4 ……

Yeah, if anything, Nintendo is the worst offender. I don’t have an issue with exclusives period.

Pro: Sunset Overdrive traversal with webslinging

Con: Boilerplate Arkham combat

I liked what I saw, but I think maybe I’d prefer to see Insomniac doing their own thing again rather than being constrained by an existing IP.

To be honest, I was disappointed to see a lot of the same villains as we’ve seen in every Spider-man game and movie. The trailer felt like one big spoiler. I know it’s going to be a ton of fun, but I can’t help but feel a little let down.

I mean, maybe they just aren’t showing everything off yet? You said it felt like a spoiler but maybe they’re intentionally only showing the usual villains.
